El Paso, TX-raised Amy Tatum obtained her Master of Music degree from the University of Southern California, and previously a Bachelor of Music, Magna Cum Laude, in the same field from Arizona State University. Amy has performed for The Bolshoi Ballet and Ballet Arizona, and she played principal flute in the American Youth Symphony, where she served four seasons. Since then, Amy has appeared with numerous CA-based organizations such as New West Symhpony, Stockton Symphony, Santa Monica Symphony and Center Stage Opera. Ms. Tatum records on a variety of standard and ethnic flutes for film and television music in studios such as Capitol Records, Warner Brothers, Paramount, and Firehouse Studios, and has recorded on the Summit, Capitol, and XL record labels. Her playing can be heard on the latest albums by Yellowcard and Devendra Banhart.
Amy is fortunate to have collaborated with some of the world’s foremost artists and musicians, including Yo-Yo Ma, James Galway, Sarah Chang, Yundi Li, Gunther Schuller, Quincy Jones, Natalie Cole, Stevie Wonder, James Moody, Nancy Wilson, John Faddis, Dave Koz, Monica Mancini, Josh Groban, Doc Severinson, Jamie Cullum, Brad Paisley, Michael McDonald, Shelly Berg, George Crumb, John Williams, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and Kent Nagano. Her performances have taken her to Carnegie Hall, Tchaikowski Hall, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Royce Hall, and Dorothy Chandler Pavillion, and have been broadcast on KMozart and KUSC radio stations and the Public Broadcasting System.
Ms. Tatum is a founding member of LA-based Midnight Winds, and has joined with Tonoi, the Definiens Ensemble, and others in the effort to reinstate the vogue status of chamber music in America. As a strong proponent for new music, she commissions and performs new works by LA composers, and shares her passion for music through private teaching and as a mentor for the Young Musicians Foundation.
As a former competitive gymnast, Amy relishes her yoga practice, biking habit, and camping in the great outdoors. She finds balance as a member of the symphonic folk rock band Madeline Flash.
